Why do the Greek’s, Roman’s, Egyptian’s, Indian’s, and even the Arab’s gods’ have names, but our God, the 1 and only true God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, does not? We just call him ‘God’, or ‘the Lord’, which just means ‘master’ or ‘ruler’. Even the Israelis call him ‘Adonai’, or ‘Hashem’, which just means ‘name’ or, in more literal sense, “What’s his face?” I could never understand why we just called the 1 and only true God ‘God’. Then I started learning Hebrew. Not the Modern Hebrew that the Israelis have, but the ancient Hebrew which is what the Old Testament was written in. Then I realized what His name really was.
If you look in the Old Testament, countless of times you see the Hebrew word,
There is no translation to back it up! You can translate from Hebrew to another language, but you cannot translate from another language back to Hebrew because it is too hard. That is why people have such a hard time going from English to Hebrew. The thing with the Bible is that to get to English it had to go through the original language, Hebrew, and then go to Greek, then to Latin, then to very old English, then to a younger English, then to a younger English, and so on and so on till we get to the English we have now. There are so many mistakes though that by the time you get to this point and try to translate back, it becomes almost impossible to do because of all the mistakes.
Another excuse people have, and this is mostly with the Jews and rabbis, is that they don’t want to take His holy name in vain. The problem with this though is that they built such a wall around His name that now it is impossible for the Jewish people to know what His real name is. But this is a direct violation of His commandment in Leviticus 22:32, which says, “And do not profane My set-apart name, and I shall be set-apart among the children of Yisrael. I am YHVH, who sets you apart.” How can we be set-apart, and more importantly, How can He be set-apart if we don’t use His real name? WE CAN’T!! We must say His name or He cannot be different which means that we cannot be different either, which means we can’t, “Let our light so shine before men, that they may see our good works, and glorify our Father which is in heaven.”
1 last excuse that I can think about is the craziest 1 of all, and it normally comes from Americans, “But that was a long time ago!!!” This statement is almost as bad as “But the law is done away with!” There are 2 serious problems with this statement here…
1. Does your name change if you’re old? Of course not! Does your name change if you’re in a different country? Of course not! So why would we change His name just because it’s old? And in fact it isn’t old because He says that He is, “which is, and which was, and which is to come.” Rev. 1:8 He is eternal!
2.Which brings us to the next point. If He is the same before, now, and in the future, and He says that, “For I am YHVH, I change not.” Mal. 3:6, then how can we say that He has changed? How can we say that His law has changed and been done away with? WE CAN’T!!! He has never changed, which means His name hasn’t either! So why do we use generic names that are not His real name and do not show us to be different to the rest of the world? Because of, “Philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Messiah.” Col. 2:8.
So let us change our traditions, remember His real name, and tell it to the world. We will be persecuted, but we can “Do all things through Messiah Yeshua which strengthens us.” Philippians 4:13
